FIREFIGHTER ALAN HERRSCHER, SR. 
Clarence Firefighter Injured in Line of Duty

On February 21, 2008 at 03:25 hrs., the Clarence Fire District # 1 was alerted to respond for a truck fire.  The pickup truck was well involved with fire and was parked adjacent to the owner's residence.  The responding chief's were met by homeowner Alan Herrscher, Sr. and his son, Alan Herrscher II in their driveway frantically trying to extinguish the blaze.  Both Alan Herrscher, Sr. and Alan Herrscher II are Clarence firefighters.  While assisting the first arriving engine crews, Alan Herrscher, Sr. suffered a heart attack and collapsed.  Care was rendered immediately by the engine crew.  In less than one minute, Twin City Ambulance and Assistant Chief/Paramedic Bill Majors arrived on location and defibrillated Alan.  He was quickly transported to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital where he regained consciousness.  Once he was stabilized, he was transported to Buffalo General Hospital.  After numerous tests, it was determined that Alan needed surgery.  A few days later, Alan underwent open heart surgery to complete a double bypass, a mechanical valve replacement, and other procedures.  Alan Herrscher, Sr. was released from the hospital a few weeks later and is recovering at home.
